Before and Beyond

Recharge

As I plugged my phone into power to charge this morning, I had a little teachable moment. I reflected on how religiously I charge my phone every single day, as I do my other electronic devices.

If I would be away from where I’d have access to power for a long time, I carry a portable power bank with me with which to charge my phone on the go to avoid having its battery get drained.

As we do life day to day, our emotional batteries get drained, whether we realize it or not.

Each and every day, we get up and show up, engaging with the world, but in particular our spouses who are the closest people to us.

We interact, give attention to them, care for them, respond to their cues, try to resolve conflict, navigate challenges with them, etc.

All of these are normal parts of marital interactions.

But then these ‘normal’ interactions are anything but normal for many couples. Before long misunderstandings become magnified. Unresolved issues birth resentment and bitterness. Gradually, couples begin to grow apart as feelings get ignored, needs go unmet and bogging issues go unaddressed.

For some people, a pattern of negative thinking and self-talk develops over time. This leads to regular emotional outbursts which then makes meaningful communication difficult. The worrisome side to all of these is that in addition to emotional depletion and exhaustion, this state very easily leads to physical un-wellness too.

This Christmas and end-of-year season🎄 I’d like to encourage you to deliberately make out time for yourself.

🎄Yes, get some alone time to recharge.

🎄Get some alone time to reflect constructively, breathe deeply, pray, meditate and refresh your soul.

🎄You need that in order to be energized for the journey ahead in the incoming year.

🎄This is not the time to blame your spouse or yourself for anything that may have gone wrong during the course of the year.

🎄This is not the time to “plot” your revenge strategy for next year.

It is time to:

🎄Let go of the hurts, pain, and disappointments and intentionally choose to have a better experience this season and in the coming year.

🎄In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, please ensure that you recharge your emotional battery. Draw strength and inspiration from the scriptures and don’t enter the new year as tired and exhausted as you feel right now.

Here is wishing you and your family a very merry Christmas.🎁🎉
May the joy of Jesus’ birth flood your heart with renewed hope for a brighter marital experience.
